New Upcoming Movies 2012
This Week In Theaters - Beauty and the Beast 3D, Contraband, Joyful Noise open in wide release this weekend. Disney has had surprising success with their 3D re-release strategy. Last September, The Lion King opened at #1 with over $30 million and eventually pushed its total box office since 1994 to over $420 million. Beauty and the Beast 3D likely doesn't have that level of popularity, but it should have enough for a decent shot at the top spot at the box office. The other contender is Contraband, the crime action thriller which stars Mark Wahlberg. The third new release is Joyful Noise with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. In the US, it's a 3-day weekend with Monday being Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Last weekend, The Devil Inside surged past expectation with a weekend gross of nearly $34 million. That was more than double of even generous predictions and represented a huge success for Paramount Pictures which reportedly acquired the movie for just $1 million. Trailers attached to the October release of Paranormal Activity gave The Devil Inside a big boost in awareness and eventually carried over into a very strong weekend. The downside however is that the movie received horrible reviews from critics and audiences alike (7% on RottenTomatoes, F-grade from Cinemascore). Horror movies typically drop off rapidly anyway so it won't be a surprise to see its second weekend slip below $10 million.Read More V
